The Mauritian Success Story and its Lessons

By Subramanian, Arvind

This paper examines different explanations.initial conditions, openness to trade and FDI, and institutions of the Mauritian growth experience since the mid-1970s. We show that arguments based on openness to trade and FDI are either misleading or incomplete.

Even when correctly articulated, openness appears to be a proximate rather than an underlying explanation for the Mauritian…

AFRIKASOURCES replied to AFRIKASOURCES's discussion 'Water Wars in Africa'
After the initial noise because Egypt didn't expect African countries to sign a deal without its approval, Egypt is cooling down and getting ready for a consensual solution. Good news. Nobody wanted a Water War. But the real good news is that…

Water Wars in Africa

I just read a paper from AFP [the press Agency] reporting on Egypt, Kenya play down Nile water rowThe journalist writes:Egypt and Kenya sought to play down a regional row following the signing by five African states of a new agreement on water-sharing opposed byCairo. Kenya's visiting Prime Minister Raila Odinga praised the "strong relationship" between Cairo and Nairobi and stressed that the new agreement is "not anti-Egypt.""We are very concious of the fact that the economy of Egypt will not…See More

Invest in Tanzania

Tanzania is a hidden gemstone for investors in Africa. With its sound macroeconomic policies, vast natural resources, political stability and strong commitment to poverty reduction Tanzania has shown remarkable economic growth during the past decade, with GDP growth rates of 5-7% p.a. The growth has been primarily driven by public investments. Tanzania has the potential to reach even higher growth rates of 8-10% p.a. required to fulfil the government's ambition to become a middle-income country by 2025, but a number of constraints exist.

This report made in July 2008 by the Embassy of DENMARK, highlights some key economic facts and business opportunities.

A brand new, and long-promised industrial policy action plan was unveiled in Parliament today by the Minister for Trade and Industry Rob Davies and presented to a media conference there by him and an array of other left-inclined cabinet ministers.
